I’m feeling very good today. My energy level is nearly back to “normal” (pre-chemo treatment). And I’m able to eat full meals without difficulty swallowing and without feeling “full” half way through the meal. The sore on my lip is nearly healed. I continue to treat with Anbesol and Orajel mouth rise. The rash on my face has improved slightly.
It’s amazing how much I took for granted some of life’s essentials – like eating, swallowing, enough energy to get through my daily activities without fatigue.
Dr. Beverly, my oncologist, is leading a research project on an experimental mouth rinse to treat mouth sores in chemotherapy patients. I’ve volunteered to be part of the study. During the first round of chemotherapy, I’ve been tracking my daily medications, health changes, and answering a daily questionnaire about any mouth and tooth soreness and any diarrhea. No experimental treatment during this phase of the study. I will know next Monday if I’ve been “accepted” to continue phase two, which will involve daily use of the mouth rise (which could be a placebo).
A personal benefit of the research project is that it forced me to document my situation each and every day. This includes how I responded to medications for the various side-effects. Mary and I are planning to use this information to know how to best respond to side-effects during my second round of chemo scheduled for May 3. We will also start using some of the “use as needed” medication proactively in advance of the side-effects to minimize or eliminate the side-effects.
I have felt great this entire day and I am very grateful!
